Colors and Dreams

Colors are the most ancient and universal symbols. They are vibrations of light and represent the opposites of feminine and masculine, of light and dark. The fundamental distinction between forces of light and dark is expressed through white -all the colors of the spectrum- and black -absence of color.
The polar opposites of creation, according to chinese philosophy, are symbolized by white -the active principle, masculine yang- and black -passive principle, feminine yin.
Basic colors, yellow, red and blue, express basic emotions.
Dreams of intense color indicate intense experiences, while according to contemporary dream research, people who have colorful dreams are rather characterized by irritability and emotionality.

White
It represents something pure, positive or transcendental.
Also, eternity, redemption, innocence, joy, ecstasy, light and life.
It symbolizes wedding -the union of opposites that form something whole-, as well as death, transformation and renewal.

Yellow
Sun, light, illumination, comprehension, generosity.
It is related to the purifying power of the flame, as well as cognitive clarity and insight.
It symbolizes the point of departure for the spiritual ascension, up to the point of arrival, which is gold.
It may express cowardice too.

Green
A color with ambiguous meaning, both beneficial and destructive. It can be warm or cold. The color of nature, green represents energy, youth and the refreshing power of life. The color of the soul, of the World's Soul and anima. Jung connected it to the senses.
It is also the color of passion -Aphrodite's erotic love, Dionysos' ecstasy.
In color-therapy, it is used as an antidote for exhaustion and insomnia.
Destructively, green is the color of decay, decomposition and death. It symbolizes the overgrown vegetation of abandoned things, that turn wild and out of control. It may indicate jealousy, bitterness and immaturity.

Blue
The color of the sky, blue usually represents spirituality.
Supernatural, inspiration, devotion, religious feelings, deification, dedication.
As the color of the sky and the sea, it is connected to the unconscious and the feminine characteristics.
Egyptians used to connect it to the truth.
It may express keen productivity and a sense of well-being or clear thinking, or possibly indicates sorrow.

Indigo
It is connected to higher spiritual values, wisdom, psychic gifts and intuition.

Purple
The royal color of justice and truth, purple is connected to power, authority and arrogance. It may indicate wisdom, magnificence, experience, formality.

Violet
Sacredness, devotion, cognition, sorrow, continence, aging, bereavement.
It symbolizes strength, nostalgia and memories.

Pink
Sensuality, flesh, emotions, matter.
Gnostics would consider it the color of resurrection.
It is connected to the centre of the heart and the love coming from its depths.

Red
Sexuality, passion, anger.
It expresses self-confidence and vitality.
Blood, vital force, body, wounds and death/transformation.
Vital force and human nature, materialism and fertility.
It is also related to fire -action, energy, courage, power of will, war and atrocity.

Orange
The color of fire, pride and ambition, egoism, luxury.
It symbolizes the purifying power of the flame, the burning of impurities.

Brown
The color of the earth and earthy values.
Denial of the world, spiritual death and decay.

Black
It symbolizes the unconscious and the unknown.
The dark side of the Self, the Shadow. It has to do with the repressed part of us, that longs for expression and has the greatest need for attention.
As a color of bereavement, it appears in dreams related to unresolved feelings of loss, while it indicates depression and fear of the physical death, making us face our mortal nature.
It also symbolizes passive forces, the feminine principle and the light born through darkness. The destructive aspect of the unconscious comes ahead of the spiritual lightening.
Black measures time -Kronos (>chronos: time) or Saturn returns to Earth, when things need to be reconsidered.

Gray
Neutrality, modesty, bereavement, repentace.
It symbolizes matter's transformation to spirit.
In cabalistic symbolism, it represents wisdom.

Silver
The color of the Moon, silver represents the cyclic and feminine side of life.
It is connected to the psychic nature, emotions and intuition.
In alchemy, it is Luna, 'purification of love'.

Gold
It is connected to the Sun and the masculine side of life, while it also symbolizes the most powerful value, illumination and the highest level of glory.
It may signify spiritual wealth.
